Moms are seriously great. They love us unconditionally. They patch us up when we’ve had hard knocks. They’re our biggest cheerleaders. In honor of everything they do for us, people all over the world devote one day a year to making mom feel like the queen she deserves to be.
In the United States alone, there are 85.4 million moms and 84% are celebrating the holiday. This makes Mother’s Day the third biggest retail holiday (beat out only by the winter holidays and the back-to-school rush). Not only is participation in Mother’s Day celebrations at an all-time high, but the money being spent is also something to be reckoned with. In 2015, $21.2 billion was spent on mothers in the US, with each consumer spending an average of $173.
And where do you think those dollars were going?
FLOWERS! People are buying flowers like there’s no tomorrow for this particular holiday. Mother’s Day is the winner amongst all flower-buying holidays, even surpassing Valentine’s Day. Crazy. Right?
There are lots more fun stats in the infographic put together by The Shelf. Learn all about what gifts are the most popular, where to buy your flowers this year, which countries care the most about their moms, how Dads are getting shafted on Father’s Day compared to Moms, and more!
